Every vehicle needs a cooling system to remove excess heat from its engine and maintain an optimal operating temperature in the engine. When the cooling system experiences issues, the engine will overheat and cause the temperature gauge to rise.
For example, a 4-cylinder vehicle that cruises at around 50 to 70 miles per hour will produce over 4,000 controlled explosions per minute. These explosions will produce an enormous amount of heat inside the engine. If not controlled, the heat will destroy the delicate components in the engine within minutes.
Here is why you need to keep an eye on your car's cooling system and identify the signs of a faulty cooling system.
How Does the Cooling System Work?
A cooling system operates by circulating a coolant, a mixture of water and antifreeze liquid. Interconnected cooling channels run through the engine block and vehicle's cylinder head, and the channels converge at the top of the cylinder head. The system works by constantly passing coolant through the channels in the engine block. As the coolant passes through, it absorbs heat from the car's engine.
The Many Components of a Cooling System
The Radiator
The radiator's core consists of flattened aluminium tubes. There are aluminium strips that zigzag between the tubes. The fins help transfer heat in the tubes to the air stream, which is carried away from the vehicle.
Pressure Cap and Reserve Tank
The coolant expands as it gets hot. The cooling system is sealed and this expansion will cause an increase in pressure in the cooling system. The pressure cap is a simple device to maintain the pressure in the cooling system up to a certain point.
Water Pump
The water pump keeps the coolant moving as long as the vehicle is running.
Thermostat
This is a valve that measures the temperature of the coolant.
Signs of a Faulty Car Cooling System
- The engine check light on the dashboard of the vehicle will give you a warning signal when the engine overheats.
- You will notice steam escaping from under the bonnet of the car.
- If there is a coolant leak, you will see puddles of a coloured liquid beneath your vehicle within the area where the coolant is leaking.
